Toms River Chess Club Newsletter 2018 # 47

This week (15-28 November)….

Of course, there will be no meeting on the 22nd of November as it is Thanksgiving and Town Hall will be closed. Next meeting is the 29th of November.

The 2018 Toms River Chess Club Blitz Championship Tournament was a success despite the very bad weather conditions. 18 members played to determine the club champion. 5 rounds were held with clear winners for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. Pierre Adams, who renewed his USCF membership (thank you, Pierre!), took 3rd, with 7 points. Evan Segui, ever improving, placed 2nd with 8 points. And the current TRCC Champion, Jonathan Capalbo displayed his blitz perspicacity to compliment his regular chess proficiency by winning with a score of 9 ½ points! Congratulations, Jonathan!

Bronze, silver and gold medallions with red, white and blue ribbons were presented to the victors, and prize money was distributed: $40 for 1st, $20 for 2nd and $10 for 3rd, with $20 for the club, accounting for all $90 of the entry fees.

The rest of the participants and final scores were: Ethan Leon, 6 ½; Steve D’Agostino, 6; Paul Howe, 6; Edd Knowles, 6; Isaiah Totaro, 5; Michael Favata, 5; Robert Whiteside, 5; Dan Westadt, 5; Greg Coats, 4; Sam Foster, 4; Joe O’Brien, 3; Pat Balton, 3; James Bartz, 3 (1 bye); Patrick Lazar, 3 (1 bye); Robert Capalbo, 1. Special thanks to Robert Capalbo for entering the tournament unexpectedly to even the number of players, and to Joan Totaro for her help in collecting and collating the entry fees.

Also in attendance were: Richard Newmark, Jim Tuzeneu, Steve Doyle, Stan Lachick and myself.

So many members departed so quickly after the tournament and awards, that “good byes” and wishes for a fine Thanksgiving were not made. So I take this opportunity to do so: have a great Thanksgiving and remember that among the things to be thankful for, is the Toms River Chess Club!

Due for membership renewal in November are: Tom Bogert, Vincent Calfapietra, William Wright, Janice and Chris Kenney, Elliott Kleinman, Michael Lyons, Rich Newmark and Lyubov Ubushih. Past due are Dylan Giacobbi-O’Brien, Marvin Shumowitz, Dinkar Pujara and Sulia Mason. Many of these have not attended a meeting in quite some time and it would be nice to see them return to the club again. Please consider it.

The next big event is the Christmas/Holiday party on the 20th of December meeting. The 2018 auction will also take place then. More items include wooden chess sets and plastic sets. Please RSVP ASAP if you will attend. This year, instead of pizza, catered food will be the refreshment. It must be determined ahead of time how many will attend so plans can be firmed. Contact me NOW if you will attend.

{{{Editorial by Steve D - in the original newsletter, of the three of us that tied with 6 points, Shoshin listed in non-alphabetical order, and with me last. He wrote it as: "The rest of the participants and final scores were: Ethan Leon, 6 ½; Paul Howe, 6; Edd Knowles, 6; Steve D’Agostino, 6 ..." So I changed the order to be in correct alphabetical order, and I put myself first, instead of always being thought of last}}}
