Game Overview:Black had a winning game, but messed up its time control and would have lost on the clock, if not for White being magnanimous
[Event "Pre July 4th Pizza Night"] [Site "TRCC"] [Date "2019.06.27"] [Round "0"] [White "Team White(side)"] [Black "Team black"] [Result "1/2-1/2"] [WhiteELO "1800"] [BlackELO "1800"] {Annotations by Steve DAgostino, Team Captain for Team Black} 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 d6 4.Nc3 Bg4 5.Be2 cxd4 {Obviously, not Nxd4?? which would have lost a piece with 6. Nxd4 (either cxd4, answered by 7. Bxg4; or Bxe2, answered by 7. Nxe2) } 6.Nxd4 Bxe2 7.Ncxe2 Nf6 8.Nxc6 bxc6 9.f3 g6 10.O-O Bg7 11.c3 Qb6+ 12.Kh1 O-O 13.Rb1 Rfd8 14.Qd3 Nd7 15.Be3 Qa5 16.a3 Ne5 17.Qc2 c5 18.b4 cxb4 19.Rxb4 Rdc8 {Thanks to team member Rex, we avoided the blunder of Qxa3??, which would have lost the queen with 20, Ra4!!} 20.Bd4 Nc6 {I thought this was a winning move for us (team black)} 21.Qa4! {But this move foiled Black`s diabolical plans} 21... Qc7 {Steve Doyle called this move "Queen to chicken seven"} 22.Rc4 Qb7 23.Bxg7 Kxg7 24.Nf4 Ne5 25.Rb4 Qc6 26.Nd5 Qxa4 27.Rxa4 e6 28.f4 exd5? {perhaps moving the black night would have been better, but this seemed to be simpler and seemed to force winning a pawn.} 29.fxe5 dxe5 30.exd5 Rxc3 {now black is up a pawn} 31.d6 Rd3!! {preventing either rook from protecting that passed (out) pawn} 32.Ra6 e4! {black is now marching his own passer} 33.h3 {probably done to avoid any possible back rank mate threats} 33... e3 34.Re1 Re8! {supporting e2, allowing white to have Rxa7, but still leaving time to stop d7} 35.Rxa7 e2 36.Re7 {this was potentially tricky for black here} 36... Rxe7!! {sometimes simplicity is best} 37.dxe7 Re3!! 38.Kg1 Rxe7 {now black is up 2 pawns, and should have an easily won game. However, somehow here black lost a bunch of time on its clock. Black had a 5-minute time advantage, and lost some from the team captain arguing with a mutineer a few moves back, but then it seemed our clock ran further down after that, ending up way below theirs somehow.} 39.Kf2 Ra7?? {This was a blunder, and it is fair to blame it on me for worrying about this pawn. Better was simply moving the king to f8, and simply getting the black king over to the a-pawn. White cant move his rook, off of the 1st rank, because then black promotes his pawn to a queen. And if 40.Rxe2, then Rxe2 41.Kxe2 Ke8} 40. Ra1 Ra4?? {giving up one of our 2 extra pawns. Time trouble was now killing team black.} 41.Kxe2 Kf6 {still up a pawn, but now likely to be a draw} 42.Kd3 Ke5 43.g3 f5 44.Ke3 g5! {giving black some chances now} 45.Ra2 f4+ 46.Kf3 fxg3 47.Kxg3 h5! {putting some pressure on white} 48.Ra1 h4+! 49.Kf3 Kf5! 50.Ra2 Rf4+ 51.Kg2? Ra4 52.Ra1? {This left black with clear winning chances, but black had no time on their clock. } 52... g4! {This should win for black. However, black had just a mere 15-20 seconds remaining on the clock. Rob Murray here graciously offered black a draw, which I immediately accepted as team captain for black. For example, 53. hxg4 Kxg4, and white will have a hard time stopping the h-pawn.} 1/2-1/2
